Queens, which is home to John F. Kennedy Airport and LaGuardia Airport, two of the busiest airports in New York, is the largest borough in New York at approximately 109 square miles. The area, which was one of the twelve original counties of New York was established in 1683, now has over two million residents and is the second most populated borough.
The neighborhoods throughout Queens are made up of diverse groups of people, including large Italian, Irish, Asian, Hispanic and Greek populations. In fact, in 2006 the New York times stated that Queens was "the nation's most diverse county."
For decades, Queens has been heavily involved in the arts. In the 1940's Queens was a hub for jazz music and became home to jazz greats Louis Armstrong and Count Basie. The Queens Art Museum, which was built for the 1939 New York World's Fair to house the New York City Pavilion; as well as the New York Hall of Science, a hands-on technology and science center are educational sites which attract people of all ages. Other important cultural institutions in Queens include the Queens Botanical Garden, the American Museum of the Moving Image, and the Sculpture Center.
Located in Queens, the William A. Shea Municipal Stadium, commonly called "Shea Stadium" has been home of the New York Mets since 1964. The stadium will hold its last baseball game in September 2008, after which it will be replaced by the Citi Field in 2009.
