Propulsid, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutica and marketed by Johnson & Johnson was introduced in 1993 as a prescription drug designed to relieve symptoms of gastro intestinal reflux disease including "nighttime heartburn". Although there were reports of heart related side effects related to Propulsid, the Food and Drug Administration ignored the warnings and continued to make the drug available until March 2000. The FDA removed the drug from the market when it was determined that at least 300 deaths were directly attributed to Propulsid. The FDA also failed to report that Propulsid was particularly dangerous to infants and young children who suffered from gastric reflux disease.
